Ockham’s razor.
Occam’s Razor (novacula Occami in Latin) is the name by which it is marked with a methodological principle expressed in the fourteenth century by the philosopher and Franciscan friar William of Ockham English, known in Italian as William of Occam.
This principle, which is considered the basis of modern scientific thought, in its most immediate form suggests the futility of making more theories than those which are strictly necessary to explain a given phenomenon:
“Factors being equal the simplest explanation is to be preferred”

The formula often used in the field of investigative and – in modern jargon – to solve a problem, states:
(LATIN) “entia non sunt multiplicanda Praeter necessitatem”
(ENG) “Do not multiply items more than necessary”
(LATIN) “Pluralitas not need sine east ponenda”
(ENG) “I do not consider the number if it is not necessary”
(LATIN) “It frustrates fit for pluralist quod proud to potest pauciora. ‘
(ENG) “It is pointless to do with more what can be done with less. ‘
In other words, there is no reason to complicate what is simple. Within a reasoning or a demonstration instead should be sought simplicity and conciseness.
This means that – among other possible explanations for an event – you have to accept the most “simple”, understood not in the sense of the most “naive” or that spontaneously comes to mind, but alas that is reasonably true that without seeking a ‘unnecessary complication of adding further causal elements. This is also based on another principle, elementary, economy of thought: if you can explain a given phenomenon without assuming the existence of some entity, it is appropriate to do so, since it is reasonable to choose between several solutions, the simplest and plausible.
Conceptually, this is not news, because the principle of simplicity was already well known throughout the medieval scientific thought, but it acquires a new force in Occam and somewhat devastating because of its voluntarist conception: if the world was created by God only on the basis of the will (and not by intellect and will, in the words of Thomas Aquinas), must go, all the concepts related to rules and laws, such as substance or natural law ….

IL RASOIO DI OCKHAM.
Rasoio di Occam (Novacula Occami in latino) è il nome con cui viene contraddistinto un principio metodologico espresso nel XIV secolo dal filosofo e frate francescano inglese William of Ockham, noto in italiano come Guglielmo di Occam.
Tale principio, ritenuto alla base del pensiero scientifico moderno, nella sua forma più immediata suggerisce l’inutilità di formulare più teorie di quelle che siano strettamente necessarie per spiegare un dato fenomeno:
La formula, utilizzata spesso in ambito investigativo e – nel moderno gergo tecnico – di risoluzione di un problema, recita:

(ITALIANO)«Non moltiplicare gli elementi più del necessario»
(LA)«Pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate »
(IT)«Non considerare la pluralità se non è necessario. »

(IT)«È inutile fare con più ciò che si può fare con meno. »
In altri termini, non vi è motivo alcuno per complicare ciò che è semplice. All’interno di un ragionamento o di una dimostrazione vanno invece ricercate la semplicità e la sinteticità.
Ciò significa che – tra le varie spiegazioni possibili di un evento – bisogna accettare quella più “semplice”, intesa non nel senso di quella più “ingenua” o di quella che spontaneamente affiora alla mente, ma quella cioè che appare ragionevolmente vera senza ricercare un’inutile complicazione aggiungendovi degli elementi causali ulteriori. Questo anche in base a un altro principio, elementare, di economia di pensiero: se si può spiegare un dato fenomeno senza supporre l’esistenza di un qualche ente, è corretto farlo, in quanto è ragionevole scegliere, tra varie soluzioni, la più semplice e plausibile.
Concettualmente non si tratta di novità, perché il principio di semplicità era già ben noto a tutto il pensiero scientifico medievale, ma esso acquista in Occam una forza nuova e per certi versi devastante a causa della sua concezione volontarista: se il mondo è stato creato da Dio solo sulla base della volontà (e non per intelletto e volontà, come diceva Tommaso d’Aquino), devono sparire tutti i concetti relativi a regole e leggi, come quello di sostanza o di legge naturale….
